The football world is reeling this Thursday morning following the tragic news of the death of Diogo Jota, the 28-year-old Liverpool forward, in a car accident in Spain. His brother, André Silva, a 25-year-old footballer playing for Portuguese second division side Penafiel, also perished in the crash.
According to initial reports from Spanish sports daily Marca, the accident occurred near Zamora in northern Spain during the early hours of Thursday morning. The vehicle is believed to have veered off the road after a tire blowout, subsequently catching fire. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Diogo Jota, a key player for both Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, joined the Reds in 2020 following a successful spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He quickly became a fan favourite at Anfield, contributing significantly to their Premier League title win in 2025 and playing a vital role in their Champions League campaigns. Jota also recently celebrated a Nations League victory with Portugal, adding to a growing list of accomplishments.
“The club is devastated to learn of the passing of our beloved player Diogo Jota and his brother André,” Liverpool stated in a brief statement released this morning. “We ask for privacy for the families, friends, and colleagues of both Diogo and André during this incredibly difficult time.”
André Silva followed in his brother's footsteps, pursuing a career in football and currently playing as a midfielder for Penafiel. The loss of both brothers has sent shockwaves throughout the Portuguese football community.
Diogo Jota and André had recently celebrated a joyous occasion – Diogo’s marriage – and the forward was reported to be en route back to England when the tragedy occurred. News of the accident spread quickly throughout the football world, prompting an outpouring of grief and condolences from clubs, players, and fans alike.
Cristiano Ronaldo, a long-time teammate of Jota on the Portuguese national team, posted a heartfelt message on social media, stating, "This makes no sense. We were just together with the national team, you had just gotten married. To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you."
The Portuguese Football Federation has requested a moment of silence be observed before tonight’s Euro Women's match between Portugal and Spain. Investigations are ongoing.
