Huntingdon, England – A train journey turned into a scene of terror Friday evening when a knifeman attacked passengers aboard a London North Eastern Railway (LNER) service traveling from Doncaster to King’s Cross. Authorities have confirmed multiple injuries, with several victims in critical condition. Police have apprehended two suspects, and counter-terrorism units are assisting with the investigation.
Passengers described scenes of chaos and panic as the attacker moved through the carriages wielding a knife. One passenger, Olly Foster, initially believed the shouting and screams were Halloween pranks, but soon realized the terrifying reality. “People were shouting ‘run,’ and there was blood everywhere,” he recounted to the BBC. Another passenger reported seeing a man running through the carriage, his arm covered in blood, while desperately trying to shield a young girl.
Emergency services were alerted around 7:40 PM local time, and police swiftly intervened at Huntingdon station, approximately 80 miles north of London. Multiple ambulances were dispatched, and injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals. Nine individuals are currently in critical condition, according to police sources.
"This is a deeply concerning incident, and our thoughts are with everyone affected," said Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a statement released on social media. "I commend the swift response of our emergency services."
Rail services on the affected line have been suspended, causing significant disruption for travelers. LNER is advising passengers to avoid travel on this route while investigations continue.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Authorities are currently questioning the two suspects and reviewing security footage to establish the facts. Counter-terrorism officers are involved as a precaution, but detectives are keeping all lines of inquiry open.
The incident has shocked the nation and prompted renewed debate about public safety and security measures on public transport. “We will leave no stone unturned in determining what happened and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice,” said a police spokesperson.
